Kate Pankhurst

Mariella MysteryIllustrator and author Kate Pankhurst’s career will inspire any youngsters who love drawing and writing stories. Kate followed her undergraduate degree with a Masters in Children’s Book Illustration. Since graduating, she has illustrated books for some of our most popular writers, including Steve Hartley’s Danny Baker Record Breaker series and books by Julia Jarman, Holly Webb and Judy Blume.

Kate’s career took an unexpected twist when, after seeing a drawing of a mock-up book cover with a new fictional character, she was asked by a publisher if she could write a story to accompany her illustrations. Ultimately this one-off drawing to showcase her illustration talents led to her writing and illustrating the Mariella Mystery series and an initial four-book publishing deal.

Kate is based in Leeds and has visited many schools to offer a range of writing and illustration workshops for Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils.  Her sessions include a school assembly featuring a live drawing demonstration and book reading with audience participation, followed by workshops with smaller groups.  Please follow the link for more details about Kate’s school visits.
