Teresa Flavin’s school visits

The Blackhope Enigma bookcoverTeresa is available for half day and full day visits and could also do a single session only in the Leeds area. For a half day visit Teresa would suggest running two sessions. A full day visit comprises four sessions.

A sample session for a visit from Teresa would involve:

Session 1: Wacky Stories and Pictures with KS1 (30 minutes, up to 35 pupils)
A fun and interactive brainstorming session for the youngest pupils. Teresa will use their character suggestions and her drawing skills at the flip chart to create a group story. The children can develop it into their own stories using a template that Teresa provides to teachers.

Session 2: The Story Maze with Years 3 and 4 (60 minutes, up to 35 pupils)
Using Teresa’s hand-drawn mazes, pupils will create the elements of a story and make a work of art at the same time. From their finished mazes, pupils can map out and write complete stories using the worksheet Teresa will give to teachers.

Session 3: Mini Books with Years 5 and 6 (60 minutes, up to 35 pupils)
Teresa will show pupils how to construct a mini book from one sheet of paper. Then, using props and prompts that Teresa brings along, the children will brainstorm stories and create illustrations using simple sketchbook and storyboarding techniques, just as professional illustrators do. At the end of the session each pupil will have a completed mini book ready for a classroom book launch party.

Session 4a: The Big Chat! (50-60 minutes, maximum 250 pupils, Years 5-6)
This interactive author presentation includes loads of pictures, creative inspiration, writing tips and maybe a surprise or two. There will be time for pupils to ask questions – and for Teresa to ask questions back! If arranged in advance, Teresa can also set a story competition with a signed book or drawing as a prize. For large groups, a laptop, screen and microphone is required.

Session 4b (Alternative to The Big Chat!) :The Little Chat! (30-40 minutes, all year groups together)
This shorter interactive presentation is perfect for schools that would like all their year groups to attend. Using slides, props and live drawing, Teresa will speak about her favourite books as a child, how she got started as an illustrator and author, about her studio and about how she creates characters like Yellow Rabbit.

At the end of the session, Teresa would be happy to sign copies of her books.

Teresa holds PII indemnity insurance and would travel by public transport.
